Back-to-School Books

The first day of school is an exciting and nerve-wracking time for parents and kids. Books can be a great tool to help get the conversation started about how everyone is feeling about going back to school.

Prepare ahead of time by checking out the school and talking about the school routine. Let them pick out their back-to-school gear to help them have some control over what is happening, and read stories with a back-to-school theme to help them connect to the situations, feelings and tools to help them get through all the emotions.

Dinosaur Twins Go To School was written for my grandchildren when they were preparing for their very first time going to school. We talked about their feelings, the things we could do to prepare and what they could expect to experience at school. All these things inspired the story to help them get ready for school. And, now they know their experiences can help other kids prepare for school too!

Roary and Rex: The First Day of School was written by D. Marie Hill as a way to help her child prepare to go to school for the first time. This book has Roary and Rex on their first day of preschool. They learn valuable lessons about bravery, friendship, and overcoming fears in this heartwarming story.

Nervous Nolan Bison Goes to School: A Starting School Book for Kids by Kevin Christmann is another wonderful resource to help kids prepare for school. In this book Nervous Nolan conquers his fears and learns valuable coping strategies that your child can connect with, and learn from.

Stories are so important to help kids connect to new situations, understand their emotions (and those of others) and get the conversation started about important happenings in their lives.

Check out these books and read aloud to a child, encourage them to share their stories and help them grow into the best they can be.
